Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion. Simple and safe procedure

Surgical abortion (or instrumental abortion) is an abortion procedure using a suction method. This process is simple and completely safe and one of the most commonly used legal methods of terminating a pregnancy.

To carry it out, an experienced doctor performs an evacuation of the uterine cavity through the vagina using the suction method.

At Centro Medico Aragon we offer surgical abortion up to 22 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. The type of surgical abortion procedure we offer will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are and your medical history.

Abortion and your rights

What is Surgical Abortion?

A surgical abortion consists mainly of an evacuation of the uterine cavity through the vagina after dilation of the cervix.

Surgical abortion is an outpatient treatment performed in our clinics. The procedure for a surgical abortion may differ depending on your gestational age (how many weeks pregnant you are), so the amount of time you will be in the clinic will also be different.

We can offer the procedure with or without anesthesia. We will discuss your choice with you at your pre-consultation and talk to you about the pain management we can provide to make things more comfortable.

What to expect on the day of your abortion

When you arrive at any of our abortion clinics in Barcelona, Girona or Mallorca, you will have a consultation (this can be by phone if you prefer) and medical assessment with one of our trained doctors or nurses.

They will easily explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have about surgical abortion.

Surgical Abortion Before 14 Weeks Pregnant

If you are less than 14 weeks pregnant, a suction method will be used to evacuate the uterine contents. This is a very quick and simple 5-10 minute procedure. It can be done with local anesthesia or sedation.

Surgical Abortion after 14 weeks of pregnancy

We will give you some medicine to prepare and dilate (gently open) your cervix. This may take 3 to 6 hours, depending on how many weeks pregnant you are. You will wait in the clinic during this time.

A suction method is used to evacuate the uterine contents. Specialized thin instruments may also be used. Depending on your gestation, you will be offered sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure will take up to 20 minutes and you will be in our clinic for 6-10 weeks total depending on your gestational age.

Recovery after a surgical abortion

After your treatment, you will spend some time in our recovery room having some refreshments until you are ready to go home. Most people will experience some bleeding and cramping afterwards. Bleeding can last 1-2 weeks and will be similar to a heavy period. Cramping is also normal after the procedure as the uterus returns to its normal size. We will advise you on the appropriate pain relief medication to take and when to call us if necessary.

Everyone at CMA was very kind and understanding and made this experience very comfortable. We were worried about going all the way there for this and as soon as we walked in we felt very comfortable every step of the way. Thank you very much.

I am grateful to you from the bottom of my heart for providing this service, many women around the world are not so fortunate to have options.

Silvia, 18-12-2019

Testimony

The experience over the phone and in person was excellent, no problems. I was moved from one room to another during my visit because they were quite busy that day. Overall, I felt comfortable, everything was explained to me professionally.

Testimony

We travelled from Dubai and they took great care of my husband and me. They were so kind and empathetic that I was amazed. Our patient care guide was very helpful. The nurse was with me the whole process and even held my hand during the procedure. They had the best doctors anyone could ask for, very kind and caring. If I ever have the misfortune of finding myself in the same situation again, I would go back to Barcelona in a heartbeat. I will definitely keep in touch with the clinic just because they were great. Thank you so much for taking such good care of us during this difficult time

Fariha, 10-10-2019

Testimony

They were kind, respectful, attentive, empathetic and timely. I don’t think that situation could have been better for me without your staff. The doctor is amazing and his presence made me feel safe. I was there for about 20 minutes and left smiling and feeling hopeful. The doctor told me he would call me when the test results came back and set up a plan of action. Within a few days he contacted me and I began some desperately needed therapy. I am still amazed at how easy it all went. This is how healthcare should be. Thank you to everyone, including the receptionist, for treating me with care and respect.
