What to expect

what to expect from abortion

We want you to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible when you come for an abortion.

Therefore, our team will be there to support you at every step.

When you book your appointment with us, you will have the option of having a consultation by phone or face-to-face. During your consultation, we will explain your abortion care options.

What happens during your consultation

We will ask about your medical history to make sure the treatment is safe for you. It is very important that you inform us about any health problems you may have, as well as the medications or psychotropic drugs you are taking.

In order to help you better, we will ask you what your reasons are for wanting an abortion. If at any time you are not sure of your decision, we can make an appointment with one of our advisors. Continuing with the treatment is only your decision and we will support you in whatever you decide. Any information you provide us will remain confidential.

Your consultation is also a good time to discuss contraception, as you could get pregnant again almost immediately after the abortion if you are not using contraception. We can talk to you about different options and help you find something that works well for you.

What Happens During Your Medical Evaluation

During your consultation, your health will be assessed to make sure you are well enough to continue your treatment.

This evaluation consists of an ultrasound, your general health, blood pressure control, blood tests, and tests to detect sexually transmitted infections (STIs). During your appointment, we will explain these tests to you, how you will receive your results, and answer any questions you may have.

Ultrasound

To assess how many weeks pregnant you are, we will perform an ultrasound. Ultrasounds are completely safe and painless, and are generally performed in the abdomen, although if your pregnancy is very early, we may need to perform an ultrasound to obtain clearer images. We will not show you the scanned images on the screen during this process, however if you feel like you would like to see the images you may ask.

Blood pressure and heart rate

Before a surgical abortion, we will verify that your blood pressure and pulse are at a safe level. We understand that times of stress or anxiety can affect blood pressure and pulse. If your pulse and blood pressure are high, we may suggest that you walk around a bit or sit down to try to relax. When you feel more relaxed, we can retest your blood pressure.

Blood test

During your abortion treatment appointment, we may screen you for the following blood conditions:

    • Negative rhesus
We may test your blood to see if it is Rhesus negative (RhD negative). If you are RhD negative, you will be offered an anti-D immune globulin injection and this will be explained in more detail at your appointment.
    • Anemia
We will test your blood for signs of anemia (fewer red blood cells than normal). This is to see if a referral is needed before the abortion, for example, for iron supplements to be prescribed.
    • Sickle cell disease
If you are identified as being at risk for sickle cell anemia, your blood sample will be tested for it. Sickle cell anemia is usually found during pregnancy and is a blood disorder that affects blood cells. We take this into account when we make sure treatment is safe for you and to see if a referral is needed before the abortion.

STI testing

If you’ve had sex without a condom, you could be at risk for a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Chlamydia

If we offer these tests to you, we strongly recommend that you take them as a precautionary measure.

Some STIs do not have any symptoms, but even non-symptomatic STIs can be passed on to sexual partners.

Screening for STIs is important so that you can treat any infection as soon as possible to avoid long-term effects.
