Our expert surgeons use the no-scalpel technique. It is effective, causes minimal bleeding, stitches are rarely needed, and the complication rate is low.

During the no-scalpel vasectomy procedure, which takes about 15 minutes , our urologist will seal the tubes that carry sperm (vas deferens) to prevent sperm from entering the fluid that a man ejaculates.

Vasectomy is a permanent method of birth control.

Choosing to have a vasectomy can be a big decision. We offer confidential advice to patients who wish to discuss their decision.

Vasectomy is a simple procedure that takes about 15 minutes

It is performed under local anesthesia, and during the procedure, a surgeon seals the tubes that carry sperm (vas deferens) to prevent sperm from entering the fluid when ejaculation occurs.

After the area is numb, a small puncture hole is made in the scrotum to locate the vas deferens, and the tubes are heat sealed. A scalpel is not used and skin stitches are rarely needed.

How a vasectomy works at Centro Médico Aragón

When you book your vasectomy, one of our consultants will coordinate your consultation. This appointment will take about 20 minutes and you can make it in person or by phone.

The consultation and procedure can be done the same day. Most people find it easier to have their consultation over the phone as it means you only need to come to the center once.

During your consultation, we will discuss the vasectomy procedure in detail, so you know what to expect that day and what to do afterward. We will also discuss your medical history and risks and complications. You can use your consultation appointment to ask any questions you may have about the procedure.

Before your treatment, you will be asked to read and sign a consent confirming that you understand the procedure, the possible risks and complications.

How to prepare for your vasectomy?

The entire day's treatment will be subject to an evaluation that will include your medical history and a physical exam to make sure the doctor can feel the vas deferens. If, in rare circumstances, the doctor is unable to continue the procedure after the medical examination, you will be referred to your GP.

On the day of your treatment, make sure you have eaten well and are hydrated before coming to the center. This does not affect the local anesthesia and will help make sure you don't feel dizzy.

Make sure to shower before your appointment, as this will reduce the risk of infection when performing your vasectomy.

Make sure someone goes with you to your appointment, as you shouldn't be driving home, walking, or riding a bike. We also recommend that you do not use public transport except for a taxi. If you need to use public transport, we recommend that you go accompanied.

Don't drive on the day of your treatment. We recommend that you avoid driving for 48 hours if possible.

We make sure you are comfortable

Before the procedure begins, a fast-acting local anesthetic is injected into the skin of the scrotum with a small needle.

The injection can be a bit uncomfortable, but the anesthetic will immediately numb the area.

During the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, often described as a pulling sensation, but we are all different.
Most describe the procedure as uncomfortable rather than painful.

You will be provided with pain relievers if you need them and we will give you directions on what pain relievers to take next if necessary.

Vasectomy recovery and aftercare

Tips and advice to help you in your recovery.

It is vital that you take time to rest after your vasectomy.

We recommend that you go directly home and rest for 48 hours. Avoid prolonged periods of standing, walking, or driving for a few days after treatment.

To help your recovery, you should take a few days off to rest. If your job involves physical exertion, take a couple of weeks off. Within a week or so, you should be comfortable enough to have sex. We only advise you to take it easy the first time.

Wound care

We will bandage your wound before you leave the clinic, and you must keep the bandage clean and dry, leaving it on for the first 48 hours.

Wearing tight-fitting cotton briefs will provide support, can reduce pain and swelling, and will be more comfortable.

You can minimize the risk of infection by making sure to wash your hands before and after touching the wound. There are symptoms that you will notice if you have developed an infection. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should contact your GP and let us know.

Signs of infection:

  • If the area becomes very painful, red, swollen, or tender.
  • The wound has colored discharge, which you may or may not smell.
  • If you have an elevated temperature of more than 38 degrees.
  • If you feel bad in general.

After 48 hours, bathe or shower briefly to help remove the bandage. Dry the area well with a clean towel and put on the clean bandage that was given to you at your appointment.

Semen test (seminogram)

There will be some sperm in your ducts after your procedure. Therefore, you must use another method of contraception until we have confirmed that the vasectomy has worked.

We will analyze your semen 12 weeks after the procedure. We recommend having 20 ejaculations before sending us your first sperm sample.
We will contact you to inform you of your results after receiving the semen sample.

You must use another method of contraception until we have confirmed that the vasectomy has worked.
