Screening for sexually transmitted infections

Routine STI testing is recommended for all women who have an abortion because:

  • STIs often have few or no symptoms, so testing may be the only way to know if you’re infected.
  • Many STIs are easily treated, but if not treated they can become painful or cause long-term health problems.
  • Some STIs increase your risk of post-abortion infection.

CMA STI testing

We’ll explain what evidence we can offer you as part of your treatment. The tests are fast and agile: all we need is a swab or a urine test and a blood sample. We can offer you a test to:

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common bacterial infection that is easily transmitted through unprotected sex. Left untreated, it can spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection, which is easily transmitted through unprotected sex. Untreated gonorrhea can spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Hiv

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a viral infection that weakens the body’s ability to fight disease. Although the infection is not common, it is important to get tested because the sooner a diagnosis is made, the better the outcome for people infected with HIV.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is transmitted during sex and by skin contact with someone who has sores or rashes caused by syphilis. It can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy.

Results

At the clinic, you’ll be immediately informed of your HIV test result by finger tap. You will be informed about the results of your other tests, approximately one week after the samples were taken. We’ll let you know if your test results are negative (meaning you don’t have an infection).

Patients with an infection will receive a phone call from a nurse at our clinic after receiving the results.

Couples

If your STI result is positive, you should contact your recent partners so they can get tested and, if necessary, receive treatment.

CMA can give you advice and help if you want to communicate with them yourself.

Fertility and STIs

Although chlamydia and gonorrhea infection can sometimes affect fertility (after PID), it doesn’t mean this happens to you. There is no evidence to suggest that becoming infected with HIV or syphilis makes it harder to get pregnant.

It is important that:

  • Don’t assume you won’t be able to get pregnant after an infection.
  • Continue to take contraceptive precautions if you do not already want to start a family.

We offer the following services

  • Chlamydia
  • Genital warts
  • Gonorrhea
  • HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9)
  • Hepatitis A Vaccine
